Things to Do in East Bali

East Bali stretches from the rice-terrace valley of Sidemen to Besakih, the island's largest and most significant temple complex on the slopes of Mount Agung, and out to Tirta Gangga's spring-fed water gardens and the Lempuyang temple made famous by its photographed gates-of-heaven view. Besakih is a working temple complex rather than a polished attraction, and the compulsory local guide system there has a well-earned reputation for pressure over fees, so it pays to know that going in and keep to the outer terraces. Sidemen offers a version of Ubud's rice-terrace scenery from a couple of decades ago, with far fewer visitors but also fewer restaurants and organised activities within easy reach. Tirta Gangga is a low-effort stop, rarely taking more than an hour or two on site.
